Following a slow start Ballinlough finally found their rhythm during the second half as they ran out six point winners in this Division 2 A-League clash in Carlanstown on Wednesday evening.
Ballinlough………..0-13 St. Michaels……….0-7
Ballinlough had plenty of possession during the course of this match but their forward line struggled to penetrate a resilient St. Michaels defense which had the upper hand in most of the individual battles, however it was the winners greater scoring spread that was the difference; in all eight different players hit the target for the winners including all three of their half-backs.
Kevin Devine was Ballinlough’s most consistent attacker on the evening and he was involved in their first two points; setting up Ronan Mc Guinness for their first score and then in the 9th minute he pointed a free as ‘The Reds’ went ahead; 0-2 to 0-1. However John Farrell and Brendan Ryan were collecting plenty of possession around midfield for St. Michaels and lively forwards Kevin Cassidy and David Lynch were threatening upfront as the Carlanstown/Kilbeg outfit forged ahead 0-3 to 0-2 after 18 minutes. Ballinlough upped the tempo and Tommy Mc Cullen hit two points in the second quarter as his team held a slender, 0-6 to 0-5, lead at half-time.
Eighteen minutes into the second-half the game was still very much up for grabs; Seamus Fagan, Ken Rothwell and Lorcan Maguire had pointed for Ballinlough but Ronan Cassidy and Daithi Regan has responded for St. Michaels which left only two points between the teams; 0-9 to 0-7. The match looked to be heading for an exciting finish but the Ballinlough management team made a number of astute positional switches and their team finished much stronger with points form Lorcan Maguire, Seamus Fagan, Kevin Devine and Junior O’ Reilly as they ran out a slightly flattering six point winners.
Kevin Devine was Ballinlough’s best player on the night, others to impress were Dereck Muldoon and Tommy Mc Cullen.
