A good blend of youth and experience was the main component for Ballinlough as they put in a strong second performance to eventually pull away from a spirited Meath Hill outfit. The combination of veteran attacker Ken Rothwell and minor player Jonnie Reilly in the Ballinlough attack was the main difference between the teams as they registered 0-7 between them and created numerous opportunities for their team mates.
Scores were hard to come by early on as both teams dropped shots short and were off target with a number of efforts but in the 12th minute lively Meath Hill attacked Ian Malone stole inside the Ballinlough defence and blasted to the roof of the net for the first score of the game. Ken Rothwell was already starting influence the game and he got a couple of good scores to bring his team within a point; 0-2 to 1-0, after 15 minutes. Both teams had settled well at this stage; Rothwell and Daire Farrelly traded scores with Malone for the teams to go in level; 1-1 to 0-4, at the break. Significantly in the last action of the half Meath Hill danger man Malone picked-up a shoulder injury and played no part in the second half.
Ballinlough made a positive start to the second half; Rothwell and Reilly were heavily involved as they went ahead 0-8 to 1-2 at the three quarter stage. Meath Hill dug deep and reduced the margin to two points with only eight minutes remaining but Emmet Smith, Pa Baugh and Paul Farrelly were solid in the Ballinlough defence and they finished with a flourish as points from James O’ Higgins, Bryan Smith and Gary Reilly helped them run out five point winners.
