Ballinlough got their Division 5 B-League campaign back on track with a two point win over Curraha in Ballinlough on Thursday evening.
On what was the warmest evening of the summer so far the teams produced an excellent game of football and although Ballinlough were coasting for long stages the concession of two goals in the last ten minutes meant they had to endure a nervous last few minutes.
The first-half belonged to James O’ Higgins who was at his very best as he registered 2-3 in the opening 20 minutes, despite finding himself in the right position on both occasions he still had quite a bit to do as he calmly palmed the ball to the net from close range.
Curraha were guilty of some poor finishing in the first-half, kicking several wides and dropping numerous attempts short to Ballinlough goalkeeper Matthew Brady who had a good outing between the posts. Conor Briody and Thomas Shine also kicked points as the half progressed as the home side led; 2-5 to 0-5, at half-time.
Ballinlough introduced Jack Tunney into the action for the second-half and he made an instant impression kicking a couple of good points to stretch their lead to eight points. Accurate passing from impressive midfielder Niall Farrelly had been the catalyst for many of the Ballinlough scores but when he stretched to make a tackle, in the 47th minute, he caught a Curraha player above the shoulder and he received a rather harsh red card. With a numerical advantage Curraha came back into contention and they hit their first goal in the 50th minute to make it; 1-8 to 2-7. Thomas Shine, Jack Tunney and Bryan Smith kicked points to stretch the Ballinlough lead to five but the concession a goal in the 60th minute seen the home side clinging onto a two point lead until the final whistle sounded.
Matthew Brady, Vinny Ryan, Kevin Devine, Niall Farrelly and James O’ Higgins were best for Ballinlough.
