Ballinlough were fortunate to get a share of the spoils against Curraha in the second round of this years Junior D championship, thanks to a last minute equalising point from James O’Higgins.
Despite a fine display of point taking by Curraha, four goals by Ballinlough ensured that they didn’t leave empty handed. Curraha played the better football for large spells of the game but the two goals from Oliver Brady, combined with another excellently finished goal by Daire Farrelly cost them a half time lead as they trailed by a point on a score line of 3-3 to 0-11.
Niall Moriarty, Brian Murphy and Seamus Hogan were to the fore for Curraha and kept the score board ticking with some exceptional point taking. Ballinlough however controlled the middle of the field through Kevin Mallen and Gary Reilly. Mallen was responsible for the score of the half with a sweetly struck free from over fifty yards out
Curraha started the second half brightly and raced into a three point lead after points from Hogan (2), Ciaran Phelan and substitute Daniel Landers. However like the first half Curraha squandered the lead by allowing Ballinlough to get in for their fourth goal. Curraha responded well and went three points clear thanks to two well taken frees from Moriarty and one from play from Murphy. However Ballinlough scored three unanswered points through the evergreen Ken Rothwell and the energetic James O’Higgins including an injury time free which split the posts to cheers from the sidelines, to level matters at the death.
Best for Ballinlough on the day were Oliver Brady, Emmett Smith, Johnathan O’Reilly and Daire Farrelly.
