Sean Lydon
It was with great sadness that the community of Ballinlough and surrounding areas learned of the sad passing of Sean Lydon.
Sean who was a hugely popular individual fought his illness in the only way he knew , head on with a great attitude, never accepting his time may be up. Sean was recognised as a great community person and took great pleasure from helping out wherever he was needed and more often than not would lead by example. Heavily involved in the local Pride of Place he would be regularly seen watering plants , hedge cutting etc and was widely credited as the person behind planting all the new trees around the village. |
Farming
Of course Sean loved farming and would be generally accepted as a shrewd operator who knew his stuff. A regular around the ring in Carnaross mart he enjoyed the banter with fellow farmers while having a good eye for stock.
He served in numerous positions in Ballinlough IFA and was a regular attender at the IFA county Executive where he was never shy in giving his opinion on the subject at hand. His well thought out and passionate addresses to the executive were greatly admired by all who attended. |
Club
In true form Sean was heavily involved in Ballinlough GFC and served as treasurer right up to the end. He never had to be asked to do whatever was needed and was fully capable of working on his own considerable initiative.
In his footballing career he played as a half back and gained the reputation of been tigerish and never willing to give in. That same attitude stood to him and the club in recent years as major renovations took place and he could often be found working as groundsman keeping the place looking its best. Sean could turn his hand to any role and could be regularly seen in his hi vis jacket helping to park cars , collect gate money , doing the line or acting as umpire. He thrived on banter and always had a story to share and was always up to date with ‘goings on‘. |
Farewell
Sean’s passing has left a large vacuum in the whole area and the huge turnout to say farewell was testament to the loss people felt.
The numerous guards of honour including Oldcastle Show Committee gave a good indication of the wide variety of the organisations he was involved in . To his wife Mary who assisted him as Treasurer, and two sons John and James, both of whom have worn the Ballinlough Jersey, and extended family we send our deepest sympathy . |
